The Biolab Health Risk Profile Extended Screen analyses the following elements:

  • Vitamins C (ascorbic acid)
  • A (retinol)
  • E (tocopherol)
  • beta-carotene
  • lycopene.

Deficiency levels of vitamin C and vitamin E are common, reflecting their often poor dietary intake. Levels of lycopene and carotene reflect intake of these carotenoids from fresh fruit and vegetable consumption.

  • zinc (serum)
  • copper (serum)
  • chromium (serum)
  • selenium (serum)
  • red cell magnesium as a measure of intracellular magnesium

A range of omega-6 and omega-3 essential fatty acids is measured. Either class of essential fatty acid may be deficient, although low intake of omega-3 fatty acids is specifically recognised as one of the major shortfall in the typical UK diet.

Antioxidant enzymes are our cellular defence against oxidative damage. Low levels of these enzymes represent a risk factor for the development of diseases associated with oxidative stress.

  • glutathione peroxidase
  • superoxide dismutase
  • paraoxonase.

Enzyme markers of liver and bone health

Lactate dehydrogenase, gamma-glutamyl transferase and glutathione-S-transferase are part of the profile since their activity may reflect hepatocellular damage and enzyme induction.

Bile acids as a sensitive marker of hepato-biliary dysfunction, which can cause obstruction of their flow into the gastro-intestinal tract.

Plasma albumin levels are partially dependent on protein intake and absorption

Serum globulins levels which increase in hepatic disease and other inflammatory disorders.

Haemoglobin A1C reflects the glucose concentration in the plasma over the preceding 3 months.

  • Vitamin D
  • B vitamins - B3 & biotin
  • Homocysteine
